The classification of crystal oscillators

The core function of quartz crystal oscillator is to be the high-precision frequency source, which is widely used in wireless data transmission and timing. it always called as the the heart of electronics.There are different ways to clarify crystal oscillators,we will talk about the ways in details.

Quartz crystal package      

Product packaging can be divided by "production process" and "installation method".

1. According to the production process, it can be divided int Seam metal package, Glass package, Resistance Welded resistance welding, stamping. The packaging methods and characteristics are also different depending on the product process. Now we use the products currently supplied by WTL as a comparison to explain.

2. By the PCB assembly method      

It can be divided into DIP and SMD, SMD crystal oscillator can be assembled automatically when it is installed on the board to improve production efficiency. It has the characteristics of small size and easy mounting and mainly used for electronics with relatively small space in the product. they are used in digital products such as smart phones, wireless Bluetooth, tablet computers, etc.     

DIP products are mainly assembled manually,because they has pins and no pads and the products are inserted and welded by hand. It is used in watches, tablet computers, microcomputers, etc. (besides, 2*6mm DIP twisted pin are converted to SMD,WTL series NO. WA8).

By quartz crystal type      

According to the type of crystal oscillator, it can be divided into passive crystal oscillator (crystal resonator) and active crystal oscillator.

1.Passive crystal oscillator

Ordinary passive resonators (low frequency KHz/high frequency Mhz): low frequency kHz is mainly represented by a tuning fork crystal with a frequency of 32.768kHz, which is used for Clock signal in mobile terminals, consumer electronics, small electronic products, clocks, industrial automatic control and other applications.MHz is mainly used as a reference frequency signal for new applications such as mobile terminals, security monitoring, network equipment, smart home, smart wear, smart medical, automotive electronics, home electronics, and consumer electronics.

2. Active crystal oscillator      

Active crystal oscillator can also be called crystal oscillator, and oscillators can be divided into the following 4 types; 1. Ordinary crystal oscillator (Oscillator): good product performance, good jitter, and phase noise, it is mainly used in communication equipment, network equipment , mobile TV, DVD, Blu-ray player, video surveillance, audio equipment, data and image processing and other related equipment. 2. Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator (TCXO): A quartz crystal oscillator that reduces the amount of oscillation frequency change caused by changes in ambient temperature through an additional temperature compensation circuit. it is mainly used in communication, navigation, satellite positioning, radar, instrumentation, smart phones, tablet computers, wearable smart devices, automotive electronics, smart home and many other fields.

3. Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillator (VCXO): A quartz crystal oscillator whose oscillation frequency is variable or modulated by applying an external control voltage. It is mainly used in military electronic instruments, 5G infrastructure, wireless communication signal towers, precision instruments, intelligent monitoring,optical fibers, servers, receivers, etc.

4. Oven-Controlled Crystal Oscillator (OCXO): A crystal oscillator that uses an oven-controlled bath to keep the temperature of the crystal oscillator or quartz crystal oscillator constant, and minimizes the change in the output frequency of the oscillator caused by changes in ambient temperature. it is mainly used in communication base stations, 3C electronics, automotive electronics, medical equipment, industrial equipment, instrumentation, aerospace, military defense industry, scientific research and many other fields.
